Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in final negotiations to offload part of his shareholding in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

This transaction estimates Mercedes at £4.6 billion – an unprecedented figure for a Formula 1 squad – following McLaren were valued at £3.5bn in an adjustment to corporate structure in September.

Wolff, who owns a 33% stake of Mercedes F1, plans to divest a shareholding approximately 5%.

The 53-year-old will remain as team boss and chief executive officer should the deal proceed.

Shareholder Structure

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes and chemicals giant Ineos, who each also own a third of the enterprise.

An official representative stated: "We will be making no comment on the matter. The management structure of the team will remain unchanged, and all three partners are fully committed to continued achievements of Mercedes-Benz in F1."

Financial Growth

The deal signifies a substantial rise in worth of Mercedes F1 after Ineos acquired its stake for £208m in 2022.

The rise reflects the growth in valuations of Formula 1 outfits in the past few years due to the growing popularity of Formula 1 around the world.

This was also seen in the box-office performance of the F1 movie starring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which debuted last summer and earned over $630 million (£458m) at cinemas worldwide.

It is the actor's top-grossing film and the highest-earning sports film ever released.

Current Performance

Mercedes are second in the team standings, behind McLaren, with three Grands Prix remaining in the current championship.

Their lead driver British driver George Russell has secured victory in two of the 21 grands prix this year and is in fourth place in the drivers' championship behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes secured a record eight straight team titles and seven driver championships, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, from 2014 and 2021.
